Right to sight in francophone Africa
Over a billion people worldwide suffer from preventable or treatable eye health problems, ranging from mild visual impairment to complete blindness. In low- and middle-income countries, the prevalence of this impairment is four times higher, and its socioeconomic impact hits harder.
In francophone Africa, OPC collaborates with local governments, civil society organizations, and communities to strengthen eye health systems and defend the right to sight for the most vulnerable populations.
Eye health around the world
Over a billion people worldwide suffer from eye problems that lead to vision loss. Africa has 73% more blind or visually impaired people per capita than any other region in the world.
Eye Conditions
Vision disorders stem from a wide range of eye conditions, from refractive errors to diseases such as cataracts and glaucoma, many of which are treatable when caught early.
Neglected Tropical Diseases
Rural communities living in poverty, without adequate sanitation and with limited access to clean water, are most vulnerable to these infectious diseases that plague tropical regions.
